Black Star Canyon is a popular San Juan Capistrano, California, hiking spot. The first deaths occurred during a battle between American fur trappers and the Shoshone tribe. Several members of the tribe died in this battle, and the few who escaped swore vengeance for their fallen brothers. Over 50 years later, in 1899, another murder took place in Black Star Canyon.
