From Northampton Community College Summer Theatre's production of "Jesus Christ Superstar", directed by Bill Mutimer in 2019

Beyond shocked and saddened to learn of the passing of Bill Mutimer, a legendary part of the Pennsylvania Lehigh Valley musical theatre scene. Bill directed me in what ended up being the last musical I have been a part of back in 2019 when I was his Pilate in “Jesus Christ Superstar” at Northampton Community College.

I first met Bill following a performance of “Beauty and the Beast” in 2017, he was very complimentary of my performance and had purchased my CD, and we expressed hope to work together sometime in the future.

That opportunity came in 2019 when NCC announced they would be doing “Jesus Christ Superstar” as part of their summer theatre series. He was confident enough in me to cast me as Pilate without having me audition.

I can’t do justice to Bill’s work as a director in the way that people who got to work with him multiple times have been able to express over the past few days, but in just those few short weeks I worked with him on the show every single great thing about him was proven true. He was a kind, patient man who was overwhelmingly supportive and had a great vision for the show. He helped me feel confident in my performance when I started to feel that I wasn’t living up to the immense talent around me. He put together an incredible cast and show, one that I am proud to have been a small part of and one of the finest productions I was ever blessed to be a part of.

I had hoped one day we’d work together again if I ever were to return to the theatrical scene. We all still imagine ourselves performing our dream roles in private, right? I will admit I had always through the past few years imagined getting to perform mine on his stage. I am heartbroken I will never get the opportunity to work with him again and experience the warmth, and kindness that was the essence of who he was.

Bill Mutimer, you are a legend, and will be sorely missed by everyone who had the privilege of working with you, and all the people whose lives you touched. Thank you for everything.
