Hey Guys, Today we collect the 2019 Range Rover Evoque. The small SUV that gives you 95% of the big SUV experience without needing you to invest in a large car. OK it is still pretty wide but you get used to this quickly and as you find out almost immediately the car has the latest in technology to ensure that you have all the help needed when parking or manoeuvring at low speeds.

The styling is perhaps what grabs your attention first because this has always been a great looking car.. So it is little surprise the new one looks all but identical to the old. However look closer and you will definitely notice changes. The new Evoque immediately looks smoother and more grown up, so you have in the final analysis a car that is as attractive as the previous model but simultaneously looks bang up-to-date and modern. The Evoque then is for city driving where parking can be at a premium without having to sacrifice luxury and space.

And make no mistake, more so than any competitor, this is a luxury car with a premium interior. So premium design of furniture and dash using premium materials but also the latest technology, top end Evoques boast a three-screen infotainment system. There is also more room in this car which JLR have achieved by lengthening the wheelbase, without affecting the overall length, and made room for new hybrid batteries. Evoques now get a 48-volt mild hybrid system and in 2020 a full plug-in hybrid will arrive equipped with a smaller three-cylinder engine and electrical motor.

Having read through previous tests I concur that this is not an overly sporty car in the vain of a Porsche Macan but it handles crisply with little body roll and has a fine ride as befits a luxury car. It is also easy to point accurately. Little noise or shuddering makes its way into the cabin, the extra strength and isolation over the old car combining to showcase the new suspension system with longer wheelbase, in fact exactly as we have come to expect from Range Rover. Tyre noise is also kept to a minimum and because it’s a Land Rover, and off road capability is actually important here, the Evoque can wade up-to 60cm in depth. Most models are permanent 4WD. The diesels on offer are the D150, D180 and D240; and petrols versions are P200, P250 and P300.

The car on test here is the D180 in HSE guise offering180hp from it's 2 liter engine. It is fast enough and quiet to drive, overall an excellent place to be especially for longer journeys. A nine-speed auto box is standard on all but the bottom 2WD version and mostly smooth and reactive. However I should say that nine gears means it is quite often hunting for the next appropriate gear which can be annoying especially when driving in traffic.

A Range Rover’s driving position is meant to be high up and commanding, and you do sit higher in the Evoque without being Ranger Rover Sport high. The seats however are enormously supportive, again as befits a luxury car, and long journeys are a pleasure especially in the front. Perhaps it is the back seats that demand the most compromise but are still comfortable enough for six footers to manage shorter journeys.

Technology abounds and you can opt for JLR's Ground View system. Cameras around the front of the car show on screen an image between and forward of the front wheels. Also available is the rear-view mirror which is camera linked showing an image from behind the rear roof aerial. It offers a wide angle image which allows you to see past rear passengers or perhaps a boot packed high.

The Evoque Range starts at £31,600 for the 150bhp diesel and all other versions have four-wheel drive, auto transmission and the mild hybrid system where you may well find yourself spending more that 50,000 pounds but even here this is not overly expensive for a car from a luxury manufacturer and the technology on offer is up there with luxury machines costing a fair amount more..

All in all a class act and although I would personally choose the Range Rover Velar because its driving characteristics better reflect my own driving style, if you do want a smaller car that does 90% of what the Velar can offer for considerably less cash then I would have no hesitation in recommending the new Evoque
