Learning the Creation of the Global IP From Japanese ACG History

Aki Nakamura, Ph.D. Ritsumeikan Center for Game Studies
Professor, /College of Image Arts and Sciences, Ritsumeikan University

Abstract:

Among the top 25 media franchises, six from Japan are ranked, which might be unusual since the market size of the entertainment industry is behind those of North America and China. But the success of Japanese IP holders takes time to come. This lecture attempts to shed light on how various creative works conceived in developed in Japan were able to nurture and eventually gain competitive advantages over others, eventually leading the IPs to achieve global competitiveness.

Recognizing that innovation requires a period of learning (copying) and imitation, this lecture will point out that the current growth of global IP originating from Japan can be attributed to the appropriate expression of Japan's unique values using the methodology provided by the West (laws regarding manga, anime, and games). This is a critical point. In this regard, the history of prominent media franchises such as "Godzilla," "Dragon Ball," "Mario," and "Pokémon" will be presented.
