At the beginning of the movie, it is narrated that dogs have been used by the US military since world war I. Over three thousand dogs have served as soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan. The protagonist of the movie is one such dog named Max. At the beginning of the movie, Max leads the US military soldiers to a settlement in Afghanistan.
