From the time capsule - 1986 - When the Boston Association of Black Journalists decided to pay tribute to four pioneering news photographers who began their television careers in the 1960s and '70s, it was my privilege to turn the camera on each one of them to highlight their work and their role in advancing the coverage of people of color in the City of Boston. Using my own camcorder, I followed each photographer around as they worked with reporters and did their jobs in the field. Then, I recorded interviews with friends, family and colleagues of the four men so as to glean from those closest to them what made each one exceptional. Each gentleman was special but I think this profile of Therman Toon - who lived in Boston and who sent his children to the public schools during a period of racial turmoil - best epitomizes the pressure and the difficulties each man endured as they blazed a trail so that others might follow.
