During my last interview with Cory Bernardi, we discussed the Yes Campaign noticeably running out of steam; and how this is no new trend in the history of referendums.

This will be the 46th Referendum since Federation, and Labor's 25th. Only 8 have ever won, with Labor taking a single victory. The Australian Labor Party has always had a tense relationship with our Constitution, opposing its draft in 1897 and campaigning against its ratification - to then challenge it 25 times thereafter to little success.

Strategy plays a large role - Albanese declared his support for the new Referendum on the night of his election, before an opposition leader had been named. There was no way then that he enjoyed any bipartisan support before putting the Voice to Parliament on the agenda.

The Australian people are very wise people. They don't want to change their Constitution. Support for a new referendum tends to drop off exponentially in the days leading to the vote, as busy citizens become more informed.
