Just in time for Halloween weekend! Strange, guttural sounds emanating from a flooded, abandoned mine! I’m hoping it was just a disturbed frog. Listen to it and let me know what you think was making that loud, somewhat aggressive noise!

I hiked to a flooded, abandoned gold mine that I’ve been wanting to properly document for eight years now. This mine and the old, almost non-existent road that leads to it are not indicated on any topographic maps.  Unfortunately our friends at the Forest Service got there before me and possibly tried to dynamite the tunnel shut. When that failed, they installed a large bat gate in the entrance. Their explosion, however, caused large boulders to fall in front of the entrance thus making a dam which has caused the mine to flood. Because the water can’t freely flow out of the mine, the mine is basically full of stagnant water which is quite dangerous. Why is it dangerous? Stagnant water in an abandoned mine can harbor deadly gases that get released when the water is disturbed. One breath of that and you’re dead in a couple seconds!

As I was standing in a foot of water at the bat gate looking into the mine and doing my narration, I started hearing a strange sound that I think was a frog. However, it was quite loud and it seemed to get more aggressive and more frequent as I kept speaking. It almost sounded animal-like near the end. I’m hoping it was just a frog, but I’ve never really heard a frog sound quite like that. It was a little unsettling, to say the least. I’m glad I ditched my original plan to hike to this mine at night because it would’ve been that much scarier hearing that sound then.
