Cuban cockroaches are pests native to Cuba, as hinted in the name. It is said they also got the name ‘green banana cockroach’ because they were hiding among a crate of green bananas when they were first introduced to the United States. These cockroaches are only found in certain warm and humid states in the southern US, including but not limited to California, Texas, Florida, and Virginia.

Cuban cockroaches are similar in size to other outdoor cockroach species, reaching about 1 to just over 2 inches in length when fully matured. Female roaches tend to be larger and wider than males. Although adult Cuban roaches are iconically light green, the nymphs are actually brown and become green after molting several times. Cuban cockroaches have long wing lengths and are very strong flyers.

Cuban cockroaches are primarily found outdoors and will rarely invade structures. They’ll only invade indoors if they detect sugary substances inside when there are no food sources outside. Cuban cockroaches are nocturnal and will typically take shelter underneath debris and leaf litter during the day. When inspecting outdoors, be sure to check for yard debris, leaf piles, logs, stepping stones, larger garden rocks, and piles of wood. At night, these pests are known to be attracted to light, so they can also be found around any light fixtures on your property. Since Cuban roaches feed on sweets, check nearby fruit-bearing trees or plants and your trash cans for foraging roaches. Be on the lookout for the roaches’ bright, lime-green color.

To get rid of a Cuban cockroach infestation, you’ll need to use several products that can repel and kill roaches like Reclaim IT and Ficam Insect Bait. Reclaim IT is a Bifenthrin-based liquid insecticide concentrate that must be mixed with water before application. You’ll spray this product as a perimeter application around your structure to repel Cuban cockroaches and kill any pests that make contact with the barrier. Ficam Insect Bait is a ready-to-use bait made with Orthoboric Acid. Labeled pests will be attracted to the product, eat it, and eventually die within the day.

To use Reclaim IT as a perimeter application, we recommend you apply a rate of 1.0 fluid ounce of product over 1,000 square feet of treatment area. We also recommend you use a 1-gallon handheld pump sprayer to make mixing and spraying quick and simple. Apply your insecticide solution as a perimeter treatment around your structure’s foundation. Create a barrier by spraying 3 feet up the structure and 3 feet out. Next, treat the entry points you noted earlier in your inspection. Be sure to spray around doors, windows, openings created by utility pipes, the garage door, and especially light fixtures. Once an adult roach comes into contact with the chemical solution, it can take up to an hour for it to die.

Next, reinforce your perimeter with Ficam Insect Bait to lure and eliminate Cuban cockroaches and other labeled pests. Use a rate of 6 ounces per 100 square feet of treatment area. Hold the container about 4-5 inches above the ground and shake the product out in 2 to 4 foot bands around your treatment perimeter. Make sure you are at least 10 feet away from your structure. You can also apply Ficam around trees, flower beds, mulch, and near woodpiles where you’ve seen Cuban cockroach activity. Cuban cockroaches that consume the bait will die within several hours.

After getting rid of the Cuban cockroaches on your property, be sure to implement these preventive measures to make sure they don’t return. Start by getting rid of harborage areas by picking up lawn debris, stacking firewood away from the structure, and regularly raking the lawn free of any leaf litter. This will reduce the amount of hiding places Cuban cockroaches have, discouraging them from settling on your property. For year-round control, make reapplications of Reclaim IT and Ficam Insect Bait every 3 months to ensure you won’t see a Cuban Cockroach ever again.
