In India, thousands of farmers equipped with heavy machinery prepared on Wednesday for a protest march to New Delhi deferred the government's meeting proposal after one of the protesters died amid violent clashes at the protest site, a union leader said.

"If one of us has been killed today, I don't think conducting a meeting in such an environment would be appropriate," Jagjit Singh Dallewal, a leader from the farmers' union said.

Video showed farmers scrambling away from tear gas used by police to disperse them.

As tensions rise, Indian authorities have appealed to protesting farmers to engage in a fifth round of talks.

Meanwhile, Assistant Inspector General of Police in Haryana, Manisha Chaudhary, appealed to the farmers and said, “We request them again to not bring such heavy machines to the protest site."
