When Sweden's society grew rapidly after the Second World War, large and protected oil storages were needed, rebuilding abandoned mines for large-scale fuel storage was both a quick and cheap solution.

In the Härsbacka mine, The Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency stored 160,000 tons of heavy fuel oil and in the Isättra mine there were 60,000 tons of aviation fuel that was disposed of by the Navy.

During 30 years, approx. 5,000 ships called with fuel that was transported 2 kilometers up to the mines for emergency storage. Today, both infrastructure and significant amounts of oil remain.

The establishment of these giant oil depots in Österåker Municipality went in record time, but getting rid of the oil will take a full 350 years.

This is the story of Flaxenvik's Oil Depot.
