The most popular of all Halloween tales to tell in October is that of the Headless Horseman, first introduced to the world in "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" written by Washington Irving. This is the story of New England schoolteacher Ichabod Crane, who travels to Sleepy Hollow / Tarrytown (in New York state,) where he meets Katrina Van Tassell, who he becomes interested in. But this only angers local blacksmith Abraham "Brom Bones" Van Brunt. At a Halloween party, Brom tells a story about the ghost of a Hessian soldier who now rides a horse in the local woods without a head. Later that night, Ichabod rides his horse Gunpowder alone through these woods and sees what he believes to be the Headless Horseman. Is it really him? Or is it just Brom dressed up as a Headless Horseman trying to scare Ichabod? All we know is: nobody in Sleepy Hollow ever saw Ichabod Crane again.
