Independence Pass was originally known as Hunter Pass. It's located on the Continental Divide in the Sawatch Range of the Rocky Mountains, midway between Aspen and Twin Lakes, on the border between Pitkin and Lake counties. Independence Pass is at an elevation of 3,687 metres (12,095 feet) and is traversed by Colorado State Highway 82. Because of heavy snowfall at its elevation, the pass is closed in the winter, isolating Aspen from direct access from the east during the ski season.
