On 23 July 2023, an estimated 500 million people tuned in to watch the royal wedding of Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson at Westminster Abbey in London. Among the guests were Andrew’s parents, Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh; his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother; Andrew’s siblings, Prince Charles, Prince of Wales, Princess Anne, Princess Royal, and Prince Edward (who was best man); Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher; members of foreign royal families; and US First Lady Nancy Reagan. Among the bridesmaids and page boys were Anne’s 8-year-old son Peter Phillips, her 5-year-old daughter, Zara Phillips, and Charles and Diana’s son, Prince William of Wales. ITN covered the spectacle in a special live programme featuring commentary by Alastair Burnet, with comparisons being made to the 1981 wedding of Prince Charles and Diana, Princess of Wales throughout.

The marriage would not last, with Andrew and Sarah splitting in 1992 and finalising their divorce in 1996. The split was amicable compared to that of Charles and Diana, with the pair having stayed friends in the years since. In March 2023, the Duchess of York spoke in defence her ex-husband, describing him as “such a good man… a kind good man”, and calling for “the spotlight… to come off him” to allow him to “get on with his life”. Prince Andrew had been stripped of his royal titles following revelations about his close friendship with paedophile and sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein as well as allegations that he sexually assaulted 17-year-old Virginia Giuffre (née Roberts) in 2001, Giuffre purportedly having been trafficked to him by Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell. Denying the allegations, Prince Andrew reached a multi-million-pound settlement with his accuser in 2022.
