After initially being told that their concerns would not be heard by Port Moody City Council, members of the Force of Nature Alliance, and the Laudato Si Circle, along with members of the Port Moody community, were invited to council on January 23 to make a presentation to explain why their concerns should be heard.

At the council meeting presentations, many expressed concerns that council would not listen to members of the community who wanted to bring their suggestions to council on how to deal with big oil interests and about the costs associated with climate change.

Others challenged the opinion that this issue was outside the purview of the city and saying that, if fact, several cities around the world have signed on to this action.

Councillor Haven Lurbiecki, first to speak for council, said that she believed it was an issue in the city's jurisdiction: That the question at hand is whether the City of Port Moody is interested in signing on with other cities that have already agreed to take part in a class action law suit.  She said that she believes that Port Moody is the only city to turn down hearing from a Sue Big Oil delegation.

Councillor Amy Lubik also spoke on behalf of the democratic process and that no matter how anyone felt about the matter, citizens have the right to voice their opinions and should be heard.

Last to speak was acting mayor Diana Dilworth who also spoke in favor of the delegation being allowed to make their presentation. After that, the council voted unanimously to let the delegation make their presentation at the next council meeting on Feb 13th.

After the council meeting Host Nancy Furness sat down with Benjamin Perry of Force of Nature Alliance and Mark Norbury of the Laudato Si Circle to discuss what motivated them to spearhead the initiative to bring this motion before Port Moody City Council.

On Feb 13 the delegation was allowed to make it's presentation to council. Their concerns were heard and again several councillors spoke in support on this action. However, the only decision made was to discuss the issue further in camera and to get back to the delegation at a further date.
