Muslims generally bury their dead. But in some countries, Muslims have been forced to cremate deceased family members, and during the early days of COVID, there was a push to cremate bodies, thinking it might be safer. Dr. Shabir Ally says that burial rites are deeply entrenched in the Islamic tradition, marking the faith of the deceased and connecting to Muslim understandings of resurrection and judgment. On the other hand, cremations sound like a foretaste of the fire of Hell, which Muslims want to avoid. He explains that the Quran doesn't explicitly say that Muslims must be buried, so there is scope for flexibility. If it so happens that a body is cremated, God is Merciful and Just and won't hold the person accountable; instead, God will give them recompense in the Life Hereafter.
