Rubicon Trail 2019 Snow Melt - The Push to Buck Island Lake and Up Old Sluice in the International Scout II , Jeep Wrangler Rubicon Hard Rock and a Monster Toyota Truck / Truggy

What's the Rubicon Trail like? We gave you and idea of that in last years Rubicon video    • What's the Rubicon Trail Like? Wheeli...

What's the Rubicon Trail like before the snow melts?
Well, It's slower, it's colder, it's more challenging and it's still f#$king "Awe-Awe-Awesome!"

In the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon and International Scout II, we set out from Loon Lake to go as far as Rubicon Springs, but with some other goals in mind too;
1) Get to Buck Island Lake
2) Go up Old Sluice
3) Check out the RTF (Rubicon Trail Foundation ) property
4) Get to Rubicon Springs and head back out to Loon Lake

We did all accept Rubicon Springs. The snow and an oppurtunity to camp at the RTF property slowed us down by two days... and that was okay. Better actually. We have seen Rubicon Springs before and the RFT property was something new for us.

Night 1 we camped near Loon Lake where we met a father and son who attempted the gatekeeper in a stock (rented!) Toyota Tacoma. This didn't turn out well for them, but we helped them off the trail and - I guess - they made it home?

Our 1st day into the trail, we hit multiple snow drifts on Wentworth, after the Granite Bowl, up to Ellis Creek, Walker Hill and all the way through Soup Kitchen, Soup Bowl and into Winter Camp.
Between Winter Camp and Little Sluice, the trail had become a small river, but still passable. The snow at Little Sluice on the other hand proved too much for us and we took the bypass. I am glad we did. I had never taken that bypass before and it's actually pretty cool up there.

By the time we reached Merlins Bench just before Mud Lake we were exhausted. We camped there. The Snow in front us at this corner was discouraging. When we went to sleep that night, I had doubts about continuing on...

But with that next day came new energy and we were ready to push on. This is where we meet Scott in his Monster Toyota and his trail dogs ; Spider and Tippy. This truck / Truggy is a serious off-road trail rig and no stranger to snow.

We eventually figure out how to crawl over the snow at this corner and continue on before stopping for a break at the Spider Lake overflow, just after V - Rock. We wheel with Scott for the rest of the day and half of the next.

Day 3 we make it to Buck Island Lake - Finally! ( 2 days later than planned )
Out comes the Kayak and James, Ashley and Bea paddle out to the waterfalls feeding Buck Island Lake from Rockbound Lake. James and Ashley learn ( the hard way ) how not to park a kayak.
After some playing in the Lake ( yes, the water was cold ) the Scout and the Jeep head up to K5 Tree and Gas can Hill to get a little more wheeling in before camping near the Lake.

On Day 4, we pack up camp and head for the Old Sluice Trailhead. We pushed up Old Sluice and James makes a snow man at Mile Marker 4.2.
On our way out we ran into a first generation 4Runner struggling to get back up the snow corner at Mud Lake. He seemed happy to see us. Seemed he had been at it for a while. We were able to get ourselfs and him up.
This time we tried Little Sluice. While a-lot of the snow had melted in the past couple days, there were still sections we had to bypass by riding the high rock ridge to the side of the sluice, but the bottom section of the sluice was now clear enough to push through. Down Little Sluice, back past Soup Bowl and back through the Granite Bowl and Gate Keeper to Loon Lake for one more night of camping before heading home...

Another kick-a$$ trip on the Rubicon Trail. This trail is always Amazing!
