Growing up in close proximity to the royal family, Lady Glenconner befriended both the Queen and her sister, Princess Margaret, at a very young age, developing a close relationship with them. Her friendship with Margaret was particularly strong and in 1971, Lady Glenconner became her Lady-In-Waiting, a position she would hold until the princess’ death thirty one years later. In 2019 she wrote
a memoir titled Lady in Waiting: My Extraordinary Life in the Shadow of the Crown, claiming “I was so fed up with people writing such terrible things about Princess Margaret. In her role, she accompanied Princess Margaret all around the world and was made a Lieutenant of the Royal Victorian order.
