ENOUGH

"You have made us for yourself, O God. And our hearts are restless until they find their rest in you." - St. Augustine. Confessions.

"It is not Christ plus something else. Jesus is enough." - A.W Tozer.

The human heart is an endless factory of wants. Our hearts keep desiring because they can't be satisfied - not at least by the things or people in this world. This is simply because, in the words of the famous C.S Lewis, “If (we) find in (ourselves) desires which nothing in this world can satisfy, the only logical explanation is that (we) were made for another world.”

Only God can satisfy the longing of the human heart. (Psalm 107:8-9). Only God is enough for us - only God can plug the hole in our souls that says "more". Only an infinite being is able to satisfy seemingly infinite wants.

David of the bible understood this. I wrote Enough around two same themed Psalms of David - Psalms 23 and 131. Psalm 23 speaks of the comfort and contentment David had in God's care. That as a sheep under God's watchful eye, his wants were few - he was well catered to.

Psalm 131 speaks also speaks to contentment, not from what God gives, but from who He is. "Like a weaned child - like a weaned child with his mum, I have calmed and quieted my soul." An understanding of who God is (Our Father) and who we are (His Children) ought to birth contentment in our hearts. Love for God is our fitting response to all He is and what He has done for us.

Unfortunately, our hearts keep wandering - trying to find alternatives that can satisfy. But as the Loren Allred in her ballad Never Enough sings, "All the shine of a thousand spotlights/ All the stars we'd steal from the night sky would never be enough/ Never be Enough/ Towers of Gold are still too little/ These hands could hold the world but it'll/ Never be enough/ Never be Enough for me."

Only Jesus is enough. Earth's pleasures and its gold cannot satisfy at all. Until we find our rest in Him, we will restlessly search.
