He was related to Hans von Manteuffel who fell 1919 at Riga and should tell the story of him and the Baltikumer, German soldiers fighting shortly after ww1 in the Baltic states.. The poem was created in 1920, just one year after Hans has fallen, but published the first time in the 30s without a melody.
