So, for years, the superhero movie has dominated the box office, specifically the cultural Juggernaut of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But as of late, it seems like the genre hasn’t been performing as well as people have expected. With movies like The Marvels that used to be guaranteed hits aren’t resonating with audiences anymore. I think it’s a bit more complicated than that, but it’s a led a lot of people to think that video game movies are going to dethrone superhero movies as “the next big thing.”

It used to be that video game movies were always terrible, but now things might be changing after the Mario movie, the Sonic movie, the Last of Us HBO show, the Five Nights at Freddy’s movie, and Nintendo even just announced they’re working on a live action Legend of Zelda movie. It seems like that “curse” might be broken and video game adaptations have potential to be massive hits.

But what makes a good video game movie? And what lessons can filmmakers learn from the Superhero genre to make sure they don't make the same mistakes?
