Nagorno-Karabakh Ceasefire Centre Shuts As Russian Peacekeepers Exit

The Russian and Turkish flags were lowered to mark the closure of a ceasefire monitoring centre in Nagorno-Karabakh. This comes after Russian peacekeepers ended a multi-year deployment in the strategic South Caucasus region. In November 2020, almost 2,000 Russian peacekeeping troops were dispatched to the breakaway region of Nagorno-Karabakh under a Moscow-brokered deal to halt six weeks of fighting between Azerbaijan and Armenia's ethnic forces. However, Azerbaijan retook Karabakh by force in September last year, triggering an exodus of at least 100,000 ethnic Armenians and the arrest of the region's ethnic Armenian leaders. Later, Armenia's political leadership accused Russia of failing to protect Armenian interests but the latter disagreed.
