Just Because We’re Small Doesn’t Mean We Can’t Stand Tall: A Child and Youth Rights Movement

***Children and youth have the right to participate in matters that affect them, including reconciliation. The Spirit Bear Virtual School provides resources to engage students of all ages in learning and action to end discrimination and ensure equity for First Nations children and youth. The implementation of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action requires a social justice approach to reconciliation.

Lisa Howell, PhD (she/her) is a part-time professor and researcher at the Faculty of Education at the University of Ottawa. Lisa is of Northern-European descent, and she currently lives with family on the unsurrendered, ancestral territories of the Algonquin Anishinaabeg, in Ottawa. For many years, Lisa was an elementary teacher where she taught and learned with Cree, Inuk, Anishinaabe, and non-Indigenous students. Lisa has been the lead researcher of “Just because we’re small doesn’t mean we can’t stand tall: Education for Reconciliation in the Elementary Classroom”, a collaboration with First Nations Child and Family Caring Society since 2018. She is the honoured recipient of an Indspire Partner in Indigenous education award, as well as a Governor General’s History Award for Excellence in Teaching.

Jessica Raby (she/her/Jess) is the Education and Public Engagement Coordinator at the Caring Society. She lives on unceded Algonquin lands (Ottawa, Ontario). She earned her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Human Rights and Law at Carleton University and later went abroad to the UK to complete her Masters of Law in International Human Rights Law at the University of Sussex. She is passionate about research and education and is committed to continued learning and becoming an active participant in actionable and long-term change.
